I couldn't agree with this more. We need some 'feel good' reward as well as recognition for the efforts we make to protect the planet. At the moment it seems we are burdened with guilt, even when (many of us) do make significant sacrifices to be 'greener.' It is basic psychology.

I have for a long time had this not so original dream of building a self sustaining city. Bruce's article encourages me again to pursue this dormant dream. A sustainable city does not need cars, it may not even need any form of transportation for day to day needs. Sustainable cities could be modules with various themes. Education of course in a sustainable city would be online if one required a structured qualification but most education would be with cooperative seminars run on a voluntary basis. Sustainable cities could be connected together with solar powered light weight capsules running on monorails with an on demand availability with a charge card of voluntary services currency credits well as the normal old fashioned dollar. In essence voluntary services would be how the governing of the city would be run. So would be education, planning and essential services.
Most of these would be by telecommuting. I was recently looking at Google Sketchup which would be a perfect medium to prototype this concept, In short we could have an army of volunteers collaborating on prototyping this project and then ultimately building and inhabiting this city as a living example for future cities. So Designer, Engineers, Architects and all Design Thinking People, let us dream, prototype and build and leave a legacy for our children and grand children
