Facebook: Efficient ugliness?

Interesting recent item in The Washington Post by Blake Gopnik titled "Facebook's Popularity Doesn't Seem to Mesh With Its Bland Design." The article explores at length why Facebook looks the way it does, and how its design is almost invisible to us. The story is accompanied by a FB home page graphic redesign by Bruce Mau Design. They spent as much time on redesigning its functionality as on its appearance.

Also, check out the Pro vs. Con essays about Facebook, from designers Paddy Harrington (Bruce Mau Design) and Bill Moggridge (IDEO, Cooper-Hewitt).
